Wall Art - for Just About Anywhere

Sometimes called decals, this is a hot trend now for replacing the more traditional all over wall paper trend that is also back in vogue and we found a great company with tons of options called Wall-Tat. Deciding where to put one could be a problem just due to the versatility they offer. You can put them almost anywhere you can think of, from walls, ceiling, hard wood or sealed concrete floors, furniture, smooth metal, shower enclosure to windows, or cars. Yes Wall Tat also carries a line for automobiles, and glass. Whether for a commercial installation or not, the beauty of these - well you don't have to redo the entire surface if you change your mind, and we love to do that!

Hot Hotel Trends

Warm - fuzzy - comfort. . . that should just about say it all as far as trends in hotels are concerned. Hospitality trends for today offer a more relaxed use of space. Use of outdoor space is a big trend and we'll show you more of that in another article. The combination Hotel/Condo creation came into being with a very large footprint when they built the beautiful Pan Pacific Hotel in Seattle. Think home-like environment and hotels have conjured that up for you in their offerings for your room stay. If you haven't stepped into the lobby of the landmark Edgewater Hotel in Seattle - you owe this to yourself to see what Northwest Style really means. The hotel industry is one portion of the hospitality industry that is changing faster than most predictions anticipated. Looking ahead, you need look no further than another enormous trend in hotels - the green factor. The Hyatt at Olive 8 has that covered for you - in many aspects from their green roof to their purchase of rural development land rights, where they paid almost one million dollars to preserve Sugar Loaf Mt. County Park in rural King County. Technology and entertainment have moved so far forward - most guest rooms have CD players, and hotels are taking out those huge armoire-entertainment centers to opt for the larger flat screens - technology is their middle name at the Hotel 1000. If you have stayed their before you are already aware of the guest comforts available to you. Luxury will never go out of style and your stay at the Hyatt Regency in Bellevue shows you exactly why you picked them - their style is guest comfort.

The bottom line - you will get more out of your hotel stay in this decade than ever before - truly you will feel like you stepped into a piece of your own personally styled environment. . . enjoy!

Once In A Blue Moon - Perfect Party Theme!

It happens only rarely, when small particles in the atmosphere scatter more red light than blue, allowing less red light to be seen from the ground. This makes the moon temporarily appear blue. Although this phenomenon is quite rare, it has altered the meaning of the phrase “once in a blue moon,” which is now commonly understood to mean “every now and then." Roughly every 19 years, you get the blue moon double where you get two blue moons in a year. The last time that happened was in 1999.

*Year: 2009 Month Date and Time: December 31st at 19:11 (or 7:11 pm).

That makes this the perfect party theme for New Year's this year!

*All dates and times are given in Grennwich Mean Time (GMT).

Sit back, relax and enjoy shopping guys!

Most men hate to shop. It takes way too much time, they feel out of their element, and they end up getting really dorky clothes because they feel like not buying something is an admission of failure. As good as online shopping is - it is still not quite the answer. Enter the web camera, web phones and then enter the Trunk Club, a new way to shop online for guys. This is the answer to a lot of mens needs to avoid those stores.

Footprints In The House . . .

Texture, warmth, comfort and color are major contributors to fashion accessories in the house. Animal skin prints are weaving their way into objects and room design for the home, just as they have been a key element in fashion design for the past couple of years. Whether you need a hint of basic black, white or brown - it's right here. The elegance of being able to completely change a room with one piece of furniture or a rug with an animal print on it is simple and extremely affective. The bathroom options are available in snake skin, leopard, or zebra - what appeals to you? Fendi offers a black snake Casa Furniture Collection, or Steuler brings out their Daktari tiles. Vitruvit has vessels in several options, such as snake, and alligator in the Ethnic Collection. Be sure and take note of Dolce & Gabbana's Mademoiselle Chair in leopard, and what completes the room perfectly more than a Karastan rug from their Exotics Collection. It is your choice - have fun . . it will be "purrrfect."

Ultimate Recycling . . .

There is recycling and then there is redesigning/recycling the way MetroSofa does it. In creating their pieces, MetroSofa thoroughly restores and rebuilds the frames so they can truly continue use by the next generations to come. Their styling is anywhere from Classic to Modern - to well how about you design your own? In keeping with other 'Green' products, MetroSofa uses old and antique frames and continually recycles many components used in the production process. This truly is art inspired furniture. Art/recycling/design and style . . . everything furniture should ever be!

Vintage "Look" Mid-Century Art

The mid-century look and feel is still larger than life, as we have turned the corner in an entirely new century. It is one of the most sought after looks in office and home decor. What if you turned the tables on that one a bit? Say you don't necessarily want to turn your office or house upside down in this of all economies, but would like to add a little of that 1950's - 1960s look to your decor. Simple - add art such as that we are showcasing above. All of these can be found at the Terrence Rogers Fine Art Studio in Santa Monica California. We are only showing a sampling of the choices - and even if you were not around in that era, as you look through the art, you will see familiar scenes and objects that are once again the "must haves", such as the Vespa, or mid-century chair. The art ranges in price from $800 - $5000.00, which is a significant savings from redoing what you have and love. Just add to it!

Orange before Red . . .

Hold off on the red stuff and bring on the orange - as the second most celebrated of holidays for Americans arrives at the end of this month, before the red holiday season begins after Thanksgiving.
Halloween has a very old origin which is not necessarily why it is so popular today. October 31st is the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday, honoring the dead. Halloween was referred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back to over 2000 years ago. Have fun and be safe! Need a screensaver? Found a couple for you

Living the "High" Life in Downtown Seattle

You might hear about commerical occupancy rates being almost as low as they were in the 1970's in Seattle, but this is not your Mother's Seattle! Welcome to Seattle 2009-10. Populated by the up and coming youth based executives literally perched on the precipice, occupancy in Metropolitan Seattle is more residential driven, than at any time in it's history. This is a city with a view if you are lucky enough to find one similar to any of those above. Wait - we're not done! More great news? At no other time, have there been more options for you to live this life, than you can right now. With it being a buyers market - what are you waiting for? Always wanted to step up to the high life with a view?

Cultural options in Downtown Seattle are as diverse and available as any major city of it's type. Seattle boasts an opera, a ballet, as well as a symphony orchestra and concert hall. Add to that a plethora of top end restaurants, theaters and museums - all easy to walk to if you live in the metropolitan area. Not enough? Then there is probably no need to also mention that this network of neighborhoods linked together from First Hill to Capital Hill to Queen Anne - provide you with some of the most charming shops to be found anywhere. Welcome to Metropolitan Seattle, your oyster . . and what type of oyster can we serve you?

It's about that time of year!

Parties and events are in the works - plans being made - and it's time to start putting some serious time into determing -what to eat! Buffets are a great option for gathering - especially if you want some flexibility in the numbers of your attendees. Here are a few tips for you to consider if you are thinking buffet, and in this economy, it can be a blessing in disguise:
  1. One general rule is this: Prepare more food if you are having a buffet rather than a sit-down meal; guests tend to eat more from buffets. However, the more selections available, the less people will take of any one item because they want to taste everything. This gives you the option of adding more appetizer types of offerings - and less heavy expensive meats. Don't serve appetizers before - save the money and add a few smaller items to the buffet itself.

  2. For a buffet serving 25-30 people, a good basic menu includes two casseroles in 9"x13" dishes (or one casserole plus meat—turkey, ham, beef), two salads (about three heads of lettuce per salad), rolls (one per person), and two to three desserts. Multiply this for every 25 people you add.

  3. Meat amounts can be tricky, but here is a general guide: for 25-30 people, have a fifteen- to eighteen- pound turkey, OR a six- to seven-pound boneless ham, OR a twelve-pound roast beef.

  4. For serving pasta, calculate about two ounces per person if it's being served as a side dish or as one selection on a buffet table, about four if a main course.

  5. When planning beverages, know your crowd; in general, though, calculate about one drink per hour for each guest. For a party where guests will be standing/moving around a good deal, plan on four to five drinking cups per person. For ice, you'll need about one pound for every four to six guests.
Want to really enjoy the event with your guests? Consider getting it catered. You will often be surprised at just how reasonable it can be. Discuss your budget and guest count with your on-site caterer. They are known to be exceptionally flexible and willing to work with you - just remember they are the professionals and will take care of your needs if you allow them. Believe us when we say - having it catered will provide you the bonus of a true social gathering - without thought to anything other than having a great time!

Newer Feel In Office Surroundings

Office space - and the trends of today are reaching well beyond the edge to bring to the people who habitat them - comfort and a sense of ease. Let's face it, as Americans we spend more time around the office and working than we do in our own homes (waking hours that is). . so taking away some mental stress is pretty important, well at least if the word productivity means anything. Sometimes it is as easy as a coat of paint and some minor repairs and fixes. In many area color and imagination can be the key ingredients. If you think you are stepping out into the new inspirational office setups take not of a few exceptional cases for pure creativity and food for the mind, with some examples from Apple, with very creative energy in the room and Google's office (row row row your boat). Sometimes simple lines and ease of movement matter even more, or the need to make sure your clients see how "out of the box" your company thinks - with natural elements in your work day. Enjoy and hopefully we have created a spark for someone to start something positive.

October 3rd - Mooncake Festival

Mooncakes - a delicate strong Asian tradition you might want to give some thought to... We found some stunning examples to help inspire you. This year, the Chinese people celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival with dances, feasting and moon gazing on October 3rd. Step into the wonders of these remarkable pastries at a local Chinese bakery.

These little cakes earned their popularity during the Yuan Dynasty (1200 A.D.- 1368 A.D.) It is said that mooncakes - which the Mongols did not eat - were the perfect vehicle for hiding and passing along plans for the rebellion. Families were instructed not to eat the mooncakes until the day of the moon festival, which is when the rebellion took place. (In another version plans were passed along in mooncakes over several years of Mid-Autumn festivals, but the basic idea is the same).

Roughly the size of a human palm, these mooncakes are quite filling, meant to be cut diagonally in quarters and passed around. More elaborate versions of mooncakes contain four egg yolks (representing the four phases of the moon). Besides lotus seed paste, other traditional fillings include red bean paste and black bean paste.
Today, mooncakes may be filled with everything from dates, nuts, and fruit to Chinese sausages. More exotic creations include green tea mooncakes, and ping pei or snowskin mooncakes, a Southeast Asian variation made with cooked glutinous rice flour. Haagen-Daz has even gotten into the act by introducing a line of ice cream mooncakes in Asian markets.

We are showing you some fabulous examples from various sources. Top left: Intercontinental - Singapore, Middle - right top: Bakerzin, Middle row: Carlton Hotel, Singapore, Large middle: Peony Jade, Singapore, Middle green apple cakes from Bossacafez, green cake: Goodwood Park Hotel, Singapore, Bottom left Royal Series from Tung Lok, Bottom center: Fairmont Singapore, bottom right: also the Fairmont - this one with hazelnut filling.

Creative Thinking

Here is something different: Garage door prints that make it look like you own boats and jets! They are creations of Style-your-garage.com from across the pond. You can actually get these shipped here pretty reasonably. Now this is really thinking outside the box even though it's covering that box.

These utterly realistic images are printed on plastic sheets which are stuck on garage doors – the latest craze for home owners who want to not so much keep up with, as totally freak out, the Joneses.

The weather and fire-resistant prints are designed to disguise that boring, flaky, graying metalwork. Held in place by industrial strength Velcro, they are easy to change and virtually indestructible.

We thought we would bring you some distinctive looks and ideas for how to really live well with your favorite pets. More and more - people are bringing their pets into all aspects of their day to day living, such as taking them to work, to the store, out to eat - they are all newer options in more and more cities. In Seattle our pets are living plush, so for all of you who want to spend more time with them, it just doesn't have to "look" like a pet store. DenHaus is a great site for finding some real furniture styling for your pet - at any size. Another source for some of the cat fanciers is The Refined Feline. One of the favorites for the ultimate high for cats is the Hollywood Tower . If you are the metropolitan life style you might want to take a look at Modern Cat Designs. Your Diva Day Your Way . . . . .

Picture yourself the way you really feel on turning 40. Why not a Warrior Diva themed party? That is exactly what the request was for BreeAnn Gale of Pink Blossom Events one Saturday recently. The birthday girl's only wishes were to combine the Claymore Japanese character along with a long dreamed wish to have British tea sandwiches and scones incorporated into the menu. Lucas Mobley Photography captured some photographs of the event details as the party began. Sorry no photos of the actual birthday girl herself, but we send along a heartfelt Happy Birthday!

A Little Tight on Space? Squeeze In - Everyone!

Function - now here is a word that is often overused. We intend to stop that and bring you real function in a few pieces of furniture. The day has come to consider many things and one of those is that famous "down-sizing" statement. Have you looked around at how many new Pop-Up Condos are being built in larger cities? If you want to live right in the heart of the city and be close-in, one way to maximize your space is to maximize your furniture "function"....

The first red bulb" is actually for kids. It's a four piece table and chairs that folds away so it is out of the way when not in use - which is the key to all of this furniture.

Next is a kitchenette designed for urban living. It is compact, fun and easy to maintain. This is not for kids - it's actually a full size eating solution and was actually conceptualized pre-IKEA.

Now we approach the "scoop" circular sofa/bed from Italian manfacturer Saba. I forsee a sheet fitting issue, however a king size will tuck nicely into this..... or if you sew - well add some elastic to a queen sheet all the way around it.

And our final option is from bonbon Trading. This is an integrated / patented mechanism that transforms the sofa into a bunk bed..... guests coming? Now this is one useful setup - for just about anyone

A True Green Environment

How green is my garden? These are some creative ways to become a little more green than other companies, take for example the pictures above from the world headquarters of AstraZeneca’s office in Sweden designed by Michael Hellgren. This is a great example of bringing green all the way into our environment at work. I can imagine that the air has a distinctly fresh feel and scent in this office complex.

What's UP?

What's UP?

Enveloping the room is the specialty of those infamous event decor companies we see at shows like the Northwest Event Show, so thought we would inspire you with a glimpse of some of their handy work.

Just about the time you think you have thought of everything to set the atmosphere, step back and think "Up". Right now that's even easier with the release of the movie UP, by Disney. Do you ever walk into a room that has been set and feel surrounded by some special mood? All of us have and there is a good chance it has everything to do with including the ceiling.

Recently on our wedding blog, "Lucky In Love" we shared the inspiration of a venue reset by Jolene Jang and husband Vinh. That amazing room transformation was completed by Prop Gallery West.

Depending on what type of room you are visualizing, or if you just plan want their inspiration, we strongly suggest contacting PJ Hummel and Co, Robinson Designs, Rented Elegance or Balloon Masters. If you can think it - let them do it!

Something To Really Smile About . . .

We rarely write about our personal lives on this blog, but there comes a time when you just need to toot your own horn once in a while. At B&E, we are much more than co-workers, we are a family. Beyond what we do in the office, we care about each other's lives, and support each other through the highs and lows of everyday life. Today I am happy to report one of those highs.

Alexis Pellegrini, who has worked for B&E for seven years, and her husband Peter, recently turned their 8 year dream into a reality. Peter, an orthodontist, opened his first solo practice in Everett, WA on August 3rd. We've watched the two of them stay focused as Peter trekked through four years of dental school at the University of Washington, and three more years for his orthodontic residency at Oregon Health Science University.

Now they begin a new chapter as business owners of a beautiful practice in Everett. Alexis, of course, remains a part of our B&E team, and it has been great to see how the skills she has learned working with us have been able to help develop Dr. Pellegrini's web and marketing materials.

We wish them many years of success!

The way It "could" have been

At 47 PLUS years old, and still cruising around Seattle, the Monorail was the image of what was to be, or in this case what not to be. . . In honor of the concept and the hope it carried, we are bringing you other monorails from across various countries.
The Cabintaxi German of 1973 is based on the start of the monorails already tested. Then next to that is the black and white monorail that for most people in the US, was indeed the "future" - the Disneyland Monorail.
Thanks to Popular Mechanics we found some great concepts fully intended to eventually carry passengers across the entire country - with comfort, speed and ease. . Italy had their own concept as well. However, for those of us from this region, our heart still belongs to the Monorail running through EMP, from Seattle Center to the Westlake Mall. Not too bad for a soon to be antique - isn't that what it becomes when it officially hits "50"? If you haven't been up on the Monorail lately it is still worthy and what a view - a great way to get the overview of downtown Seattle. Here's hoping the City doesn't try to sell it on eBay.

Seafair 2009 . . Thunder in Seattle

Just Peachy ! ! !

Thank you to "Bon Appetit" for their inspiration for you. All of the recipes for these beautiful items can be found there. These summer days bring mental notes of sweet peaches. Give one of these a try or see which restaurants and caterers are prepping these sweet sensations for you right now!

Peaches, originally from China, are among the most popular fruits grown in the United States. They're the state fruit of Georgia and South Carolina—though not of California, which is the largest producer. There are two main varieties: clingstone (usually canned) and freestone, which is easier to pit. Yellow peaches have a brighter acidity and white peaches have a sweeter, more floral flavor.

Buying Peaches:
Don't be taken in by that come-hither blush—it's simply the part of the fruit that was facing the sun when it was on the tree. The best way to pick a peach is by aroma—the headier and sweeter-smelling the better. Choose firm but slightly soft fruit that smells sweet; pass on peaches with soft spots. Avoid hard or greenish peaches, which were picked too early and likely won't ripen well. Store peaches at room temperature until ripe.

How to use:
Peach skin adds beautiful color when the fruit is baked into pies, tarts, and jams. The skin is good for you, too, especially if you buy organic fruit. But it's fairly easy to remove the skin, provided the peach is very ripe. Start at the stem end, separating a bit of skin from the flesh with a sharp paring knife. Then pull the skin off in strips.

You can also give the peaches a 15- to 30-second dunk in boiling water, then plunge them into a bowl of ice water to prevent cooking. When they're cool enough to handle, the skins will peel off quite easily. A peach discolors quickly when it's cut and exposed to air. To prevent browning, sprinkle the fruit with a little lemon juice.

Storing:
Keep on the counter in a single layer with breathing space until fully ripe. Refrigerate for up to one week; serve at room temperature. Or refrigerate first to delay ripening.

Tribute to Carnegie's in Ballard

Recently we celebrated a special occasion at what turned out to be an incredible venue - Carnegie's in Ballard on Market Street. We knew we could anticipate a good evening, however they exceeded any of our expectations in, atmosphere and cuisine. The service was absolutely impeccable.

If you have not had the good fortune to step into Carnegies, do yourself this favor and put them on your list of "must dos". For those of you familiar with Ballard, you will recognize it immediately as the 100 plus year old building given to the City by Carnegies as a library. Over the years, it has been home to various types of businesses and currently the grandnous of the main floor is both a full service restaurant as well as a venue you can reserve for a special event. This is one of those venues that can be setup for so many types of arrangements, as it has three main distinct areas that work well together as one total venue, or can be setup for individual requirements. We had our event in the Eastroom, while the Westroom catered to their restaurant patrons. We found one exceptional compliment to Carnegie's, as at no time were we ever aware of their restaurant patrons, due to the uniqueness of the room setups and the beautiful curved glass walls.
The food itself was exceptional from the Coq Au Vin, to the Rack of Lamb Dijonaise. Bon Appetit!

Ideas Worth a Second Look. . . .

Conceived in 1998, by Lisa Craig Gautier and her husband, Patrice Olivier Gautier (Senior Director, iTunes Music Store, Apple, Inc.) this nonprofit concentrates on manmade surplus, natural surplus and eco-educational programs. The results are worthwhile, common sensical and often enchanting. Matter of Trust is collaborating with thousands of salons throughout the US and abroad, that donate their hair clippings to soak up oil spills. Last year over 2,600 oil spills occurred in the world. They weren't all are high profile, but most had an impact on the environment.

LavishGiving.com is an online gift retailer that donates 20% of all purchases of USD 100 or more to a charity of the buyer's choice. Which allows them to be generous twice: once when giving the gifts they purchased, and a second time when donating 20% of their value to a favourite charity.

Lacoste joins “Save Your Logo” campaign to protect crocodiles. Brooks Brothers has the golden fleece sheep, Ralph Lauren has a polo pony, and Penguin’s got, well, a penguin–but the most recognized animal logo in fashion may very well be Lacoste’s crocodile. The company has just joined the “Save Your Logo” campaign, started by the Global Environmental Facility, the World Bank, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which allows private companies to contribute to the preservation of animal life by protecting the animal that represents their logo.

Architectural Fun

Whispy lines, curvaceous ceilings, and geometric adhesions - all used in architecture to surround you with subtle comfort, style and impeccable design. There are just not enough adjectives to describe the benefits to all of us in good architecture. We are surrounded by it every day, in every way, and everywhere, yet we tend to take it all for granted. It is impossible to tap even a microscopic peek at examples, so let us just say thank you, to all of you who work in and around this business, you fill our world with magnificence and we are in awe. . . . .

Sandpoint Idaho . . you will simply love it!

Staycations are the perfect answer for all of us to participate in the activities right in our region. This week we wanted to highlight, Sandpoint Idaho. If you have not had a chance yet to spend some summer or winter days in this area, you have missed a large hunk of beautiful summer days and nights and incredible winters. This is where skiing gets serious. Fancy yourself a skier? Then you need to fancy a trip to Schweitzer Mountain to see what powder snow really looks and feels like.

Sandpoint, in the northern tip of Idaho, is no ordinary vacation destination. Located on magnificent 43-mile-long Lake Pend Oreille, surrounded by the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains, and with Schweitzer Mountain ski resort minutes away, Sandpoint is blessed with outstanding attractions. The town itself is home to a thriving arts community, the historic Panida Theater, a busy events schedule, a plethora of excellent restaurants, fine hotels. Coming events for this summer include June 18th - Summer Sampler - Taste the cuisine of Sandpoint's finest restaurants. June 27th - Schweitzer Summer Celebration. One of the biggest events is their Octoberfest - so jot that down for October 2009.

Setting The Example

We are doing it! Take a look below - see one or more things you use on a regular basis? If you do, then give yourself a pat on the back. YOU are turing green in a good way and everyone should be following your example. There are so many little ways we are moving in the right direction. Whether you are a global warming advocate or maybe not, green is always a good color and someplace on that color wheel in your mind, it should be one of your favorite colors permanently.

Let's face it, living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, Hawaii and Alaska, well, do we really need to say more? We already have an edge, we just need to make sure we keep it. Congratulations everyone. Keep it up. If you have any great green products or ideas, we would love to hear from you and feature you on our blog.

Environmental Graffiti

Since 1983, colourful giant animals have been spotted around the world. Some seem to emerge right out of the water, while others hang in the balance like some kind of animal laundry between close-knit buildings. Still others stand guard atop historic landmarks and downtown balconies while top predators revert to their basest instincts in a bid for survival. Created using recycled plastic bottles by Cracking Art Group, these animals represent the art collective’s strong social and environmental ethic while bringing accessible contemporary art to the masses. The art group, which consists of six members from Italy, France and Belgium, derived their name from the term used to describe the transformation of petroleum to plastic, called ‘catalytic cracking’. All six artists use the medium of plastic to give rise to their own interpretation of “our contemporary problems and tensions.”
